Rural
Pakistanis Benefit from Remote Telemedicine
System
Wateen Telecoms and Motorola Provide
Telecommunications Bandwidth and Equipment
With a
population of 172.8 million Pakistan is one
of the most populated countries in the
world. The burdened healthcare
infrastructure limits treatment of ailing
Pakistanis living in rural areas. This is
now changing with the implementation of a
high-technology, remote telemedicine system.
Wateen
Telecoms and Motorola are key partners in
the initiative led by the U.S. Department of
State and IBM. Wateen Telecoms, using
Motorola equipment, donated the
telecommunications bandwidth and equipment
necessary to exchange the large amounts of
information necessary to allow the doctors
to make effective diagnosis. The
telemedicine system was made possible due to
the creation of the largest WiMAX network in
the developing world rolled out by Wateen
and Motorola. The network enables the
movement of large amounts of data between
the clinic and the hospital.
