Heavy Industries & Construction Co. said yesterday it signed a $510
million deal to build power generation and desalination plants in
Oman and a $170 million thermal power station contract in the United
Arab Emirates. "Most power generation and desalination projects in the Middle East nowadays invite private capital and prefer bidders that can handle the entire process of engineering, procurement and construction," said Hong Seong-eun, a senior executive of Doosan's power generation business.
"The two new orders give us an advantage in the Middle Eastern market for nongovernmental power and water producers, which is expected to amount to $6 billion next year."
Electricity from the 678-megawatt power plant and water from the 120,000-ton desalination unit in Oman will be delivered to Barka, southwest of the capital Muscat, when they are completed in April 2009, Doosan said.
The 216-megawatt thermal power plant project in Al Tawellah, near the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi, is slated for completion in May 2009.
Both orders were given by a company called Suez Energy International.
