Iran
is the largest manufacturer in the Middle East of turbines used
in power plants, said the head of the country’s main power plant
construction company, adding that Iran is also among the 10
largest turbine producers in world, Iran Daily reported.
“Mapna company has manufactured 34 turbines under license from
Siemens of Germany,“ Reza Shirazi told reporters, adding that
the turbines were manufactured in four years and account for
5,500 megawatts, or 16%, of the country’s total power generation
capacity.
He said the company will have manufactured 20 gas and steam
turbines by March, adding that the new turbines will add 3,200
megawatts to the country’s power generation capacity.
The official further said that the capacity is expected to
increase by 30% in the year to March 2008.
Shirazi said the Mapna is planning to build giant 250-300
megawatt power plant turbines through reverse engineering (RE).
Also speaking to reporters, Amir Massoud Amini, an advisor to
the Mapna chief, said $30 mln will be invested in the generator
manufacturing sector.
He said that Mapna has managed to save one mln euros on each
generator manufactured domestically in the past seven years.
The official said the company has at hand 14 power plant
projects with a total capacity of 9,191 megawatts. Amini further
noted that the company has struck a deal with Siemens and the
Islamic Republic of Iran Railways on manufacturing locomotives.
He said the company is also involved in oil, gas and
petrochemical projects in the hydrocarbon-rich Asalouyeh area,
south of Iran.
