Pakistan projects its image successfully at WEF: PM

He said besides many other subjects, the issue of Doha Round was also discussed in the WEF and there was unanimity of views that it should be continued to promote trade relations.            

 

The Prime Minister said Pakistan has opened its economy as compared to its neighbours. There is low tariff and trade is open for every one. He said there is no restriction on equity or repatriation of profit with level playing field for every one.            

 

On Pak-India relations, the Prime Minister said without resolving the core issue of Kashmir, progress in other fields including trade and economic cooperation could not be achieved.            

 

The Prime Minister said there is need to remove non-tariff barriers to promote trade between Pakistan and India.            

 

He said due to liberal economic polices of Pakistan, foreign investment from all over the world is coming to Pakistan. He referred to investment of dollars 400 by Chinese firm, purchase of banks by Singapore banks and investment by Philips Morgan and others.            

 

The Prime Minister said during his meeting with over half a dozen world leaders on the sidelines of WEF, he discussed regional, international and global situation with them. He said the ministers accompanying him also engaged in individual meetings with other participants of the forum.

 

Replying to a question about Pak-China relations, the Prime Minister said both the countries have very good and excellent relations in all the fields. He said China has recently invested in mobile sector while a number of projects are being undertaken by Chinese firms.

 

He said progress of its friends including China is a source of strength for Pakistan. "Strength of our friends is strength of Pakistan," he said.

 

The Prime Minister said there has been continuous interaction between Pakistan and China. H will visit China very soon to further promote bilateral relations.

 

He said Pakistan is the first country to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China. He said China is establishing eight Industrial Zones in different parts of the world and the first one will be in Pakistan, which was inaugurated by the Chinese President during his recent visit to Pakistan.

 

Answering a question about recognition of Israel, the Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan's stand that without the resolution of Palestine issue Pakistan could not consider this. He however said the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Israel, met in Istanbul last year which was the first ever official contact between the two countries but it was not in the contest of recognition of Israel by Pakistan.

 

He said Pakistan has always wanted and advocated peaceful solution to the Palestine issue as it has been hampering progress and prosperity in the region.

 

Shaukat Aziz said Pakistan has taken initiatives to resolve the Palestine issue and referred to the recent visit of President General Pervez Musharraf to five Middle East countries in this regard. He said the lingering issue of Palestine is increasing sufferings of the Palestinians and its solution would improve economic conditions in the region.

 

The Prime Minister said Pakistan has been in contact with like minded countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, UAE, Indonesia and Malaysia and formed a group of eight to find new initiative to resolve Palestine issue.
