Singapore
is aggressively pushing to strengthen economic ties with Qatar, its
fourth largest trading partner in the Middle East, with the official
opening of an economic agency office in Doha and key project
signings between Qatari and Singaporean companies here yesterday in
the presence of visiting Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
“I’m very happy that Singaporean companies are finding opportunities in Qatar and entering into joint ventures with Qatari companies and also working together with Qatari government agencies to develop capabilities in Qatar for the government as well as for the private sector,” PM Lee told reporters on the sidelines of the event. He also said that although Singapore did not have much expertise in the oil and gas field, there might be some possibilities of cooperation with Qatar in the sector. “Qatar and Singapore have good relationship and is still growing, but the potential is considerable”, he said at the event titled ‘Qatar-Singapore: A New Milestone in Collaboration’ held at the Diplomatic Club. The event organised by the economic agency, International Enterprise (IE) Singapore and Keppel Integrated Engineering (KIE), included the unveiling of the foundation stone for Qatar Integrated Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre (DSWMC) and the signing of key projects between Qatari and Singaporean companies such as ictQatar and Ecquaria, Nuzul Holding BSCC and the Ascott Group in the presence of Lee, who was the guest-of-honour. “Qatar is currently one of the most exciting markets for Singapore companies in the Middle East”, said Chong Lit Cheong, CEO of IE Singapore, the government agency overseeing the promotion of Singapore-based companies overseas. “We have witnessed growing interest by Singapore companies to explore opportunities particularly in the urban infrastructure and oil and gas supporting infrastructure services sectors”. The foundation stone for the DSWMC was unveiled by Dr Abdulrahman Al Buanain, Consultant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture and Lim Chee Onn, Executive Chairman of Keppel Corporation. KIE was awarded two contracts of equal value worth QR 3.9bn by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture last October for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of an integrated solid waste management facility, the first in the Middle East, and the Operation and Maintenance of the facility for 20 years. The contracts will be undertaken by Keppel Seghers, a wholly-owned subsidiary of KIE. Under the EPC contract, Keppel Seghers will design and build four Waste Transfer Stations and one DSWMC to handle and treat domestic solid waste. Also during the ceremony, ictQatar signed an agreement with Ecquaria Technologies, a Singapore information and communication company to implement the Qatar Services Infrastructure project (QSI). The QSI will provide the Government of Qatar with a highly integrated centralised platform, which will help accelerate the delivery of public e-services on the Internet. Meanwhile, Nuzul Hoding BSC awarded Ascott International management contracts for two serviced residences it recently acquired, one each in Qatar and Bahrain to be operational in the first half of 2007. Ascott International will manage the Somerset Corniche in Doha and Somerset Juffair in Manama properties for 10 years with an option to renew the contacts for another 10 years. ---------------------------------------------------------
